Boat Description

If the vision of a Valiant, Tayana, Pacific Seacraft, or other purposeful bluewater double-ender comes to mind when you’re dreaming of other latitudes, a tropical island, or a sheltered anchorage by a hidden beach; if you’re looking for a real, honest-to-goodness, no-nonsense liveaboard cruising yacht, then you must take time to fully evaluate “CONCH TOWN LADY”. “CONCH TOWN LADY” has only had three owners and is one of only six Liberty 38s to have been built.

The more you know about what goes into the creation of a great cruising boat, the more you’ll appreciate this one. No shortcuts, no corner cutting, no skimping.

She features glass decks and a keel-stepped mast.

If you’re still undecided, come and have an onboard look at this Fennell-designed double-ender. Not until you step aboard do you always realize just how agreeable a yacht can be: easy to work or play on, with fantastic storage for a yacht of this size. It is an excellent liveaboard-passagemaking yacht, easily managed by a couple, that will keep you safe, dry and take you wherever you may dream. She has ship-like lines, including a sweet double end and a safe, comfortable, and accommodating cockpit. Step below and the interior impresses you with traditional elements and timeless qualities available to the cruising enthusiast.

You will be impressed with the attention to the smallest detail and thoughtful engineering solutions wherever you explore. You will not find a cleaner nor better-prepared example of a double-ended passagemaker in this size range at this extremely attractive price; it is purpose-ready for you at an incredible value. “CONCH TOWN LADY” is the perfect boat for the cruising couple with a little less than $60,000 to spend. This well-kept, three-owner example is correct from the top of her cutter rig to the bottom of her cruising keel, equipped and outfitted as a circumnavigator, and can be easily maintained and sailed by two people.

It is obvious that this yacht has been cherished from new.

This sturdy double-ender boasts both seaworthiness and ample interior space and offers steady and comfortable cruising. Below the waterline, the hull incorporates a fine entry with a long cutaway forefoot, followed by a keel-hung rudder. Comprehensively equipped, she lets you move aboard and begin your cruise; she is ready to take you on the voyage of a lifetime.

The maintenance log has been kept since new and the owner will turn it over to the new owner. There are catalogs for rigging equipment and mast and marinetics and electrical diagrams, drawings for the engine, along with original blueprints including wiring and rigging blueprints and a winch layout. After purchase, the owner will completely go over the boat and systems with the new owners.

Her interior sports the tradition of the finest New England Herschoff look and she is an excellent example of design that strikes a number of critical balances inside and out. The listing broker has said in his many years of experience that he has seen few yachts he would consider Bristol; “CONCH TOWN LADY” is such a yacht.

If you dream of sailing and living on a true offshore yacht with wooden-boat charm but with American-built fiberglass construction and features better than those found on production boats, then “CONCH TOWN LADY” will appeal to you. So many custom features make her a very strong, safe, comfortable, easy-to-sail and dry home afloat, incorporating a masterful blend of intimate space and a feeling of openness. “CONCH TOWN LADY” is ideal for two people to sail and live aboard very comfortably anywhere in the world. She also sails with a very secure and seakindly feel.

The most important feature of this bluewater yacht is that she is in excellent condition, near perfection cosmetically, and is as clean as a whistle. “CONCH TOWN LADY” has been owned for 15 years by her current owner, and a careful inspection will reveal the considerable extent and quality of attention to details, workmanship and gear which her owner, a successful executive, has lavished on her. His technical and organizational skills and his keenness for zeroing in on the tiniest details have culminated in a yacht that is pristine, bluewater equipped and which literally begs to be let free from her dock lines.

The owners do not wear shoes below—another point of the care taken and the condition of “CONCH TOWN LADY”.

Headroom is 6’4″ throughout the boat and storage capacity can only be noted as incredible. Beautiful teak joinery and hand-fitted teak doors are found throughout. The glossy varnished cabin sole is teak and holly plank and all fittings are brass. The interior is finished with contrasting paint and varnish in a traditional New England Herschoff look and is in prime condition.

“CONCH TOWN LADY” sleeps up to five people in accommodations in the forward cabin and main salon. The forward cabin has a large port-side Pullman berth and incorporates a large divided chain locker most forward. There is extensive storage in the form of full-length cabinets outboard of the berth and a large hanging locker across from the head.

The overhead throughout is white formica with teak battens. Next aft to port is the good-sized head with ensuite shower. The bulkhead surfaces are white with varnished teak accents, a feature any cruising sailor will appreciate.

Amidships the main salon features a centerline solid teak table which wraps around the mast. There are two large solid teak leaves with comfortable seating for six.

Outboard to starboard there is a bookshelf with fiddle rails, extensive storage behind teak doors, and an entertainment center. The berth back cushions flip up to make a large single berth with a lee cloth mounted for offshore sailing. Behind easily removed teak furniture panels all chain plates are accessible for inspection and service and have all been replaced. There are water tanks to starboard and under settees with storage under both sides.

Above is a large two-way opening hatch for light and ventilation with custom teak-framed mosquito netting.

Aft of the main salon and to starboard is the classic wrap-around U-shaped galley that will delight the gourmet whether at sea or dockside, with extensive lockers and large dry storage.

Directly across from the galley, to port, is a proper offshore forward-facing navigation station and chart table with room for a full complement of navigation and electronic equipment. The large nav table has generous chart storage, drawers and a short hanging locker.

The companionway stairs lift up with good engine accessibility and battery storage under the last step. There is also engine access from the cockpit hatch.

There are ten bronze opening ports with screens and three opening deck hatches, plus the companionway hatch with screens, all of which provide a tremendous amount of light and superior cross ventilation. Countertops throughout are formica.

The Liberty 38 is a full-keel, canoe-stern cruising boat of moderately heavy displacement. The design incorporates features that have evolved from generations of seagoing yachts.

She has a springy sheer which is both handsome and functional. It is refreshing to see a more traditional style in this era of straight sheer lines, fixed plastic portlights and an obsession with ratings for the so-called racer/cruiser.

In the design of the Liberty 38, no thought was given to any artificial rating rules devised in an attempt to equate all boats. This is not to say performance was not considered; quite the contrary. Our priorities were structural integrity, seakindliness, performance and beauty. The Liberty 38 is a masterful blend of these qualities.

Hull and deck construction is hand laminated fiberglass, carefully rolled and squeegeed to obtain the optimum glass-to-resin ratio. We use a very low-wax resin to obtain strong interlaminar bonds as well as excellent secondary bonding of bulkheads, stringers and other reinforcements. This type of resin is shunned by production builders because greater skill is required in its use and it does not lend itself to rapid mold turn-around times.

While some designers advocate building decks as lightly as possible, we don’t agree. Anyone who has spent much time at sea and experienced the force of tons of seawater crashing onto his deck could not subscribe to such a design philosophy. Accordingly, we build our decks to withstand such violence. After all, we build ocean cruising yachts, not around-the-buoys club racers. All this extra strength built into our hulls and decks means extra weight. You will notice our displacement is a little heavier than most boats of comparable size. There are pros and cons to increased displacement. It is widely accepted that a heavier boat will not accelerate as quickly in light air, but on the other hand she won’t be slowed or stopped by choppy head seas. The motion of a well-designed boat of moderate displacement is much kinder to both the crew and the vessel.

The seakindliness of a canoe-stern, full-keel vessel is known. Combine this hull with a modern cutter rig of ample sail area, a carefully designed deck arrangement, comfortable interior with adequate storage, dependable mechanical systems, and you have a superb cruising boat. The Liberty 38 is such a boat. All sailors do not do the same type of sailing. Some make long passages alone or with a companion. Others cruise with their families or friends. Many sailors prefer coastal or island cruising. Obviously, a single interior arrangement would not be suitable for such diverse interests. We design and build the interior for each owner on a custom basis. The design is arrived at after much consultation. Most sailors have ideas of features they would like to incorporate into their next boat. Whatever the source, we will integrate those ideas into a functional, beautifully finished yacht. Such is the case with “Conch Town Lady”.

Liberty Yachts is a small company, founded in 1975 by the designer of the Liberty 28 and Liberty 38, Joe Fennell. Our philosophy is simple: start with a good design, build it carefully and ruggedly, and equip it well using the best quality hardware and equipment.

“CONCH TOWN LADY” is a custom, cruise-ready passagemaker, built by one of South Florida’s most respected custom builders in Palm Beach County. Solid fiberglass hull, incredible cockpit, solid teak interior and maintained by a fastidious owner. She deserves new owners who will continue the quest.

“CONCH TOWN LADY” is equipped for bluewater passagemaking. Her loving owners have completed their sailing dreams and have decided to place this beautiful yacht on the brokerage market for her next discriminating owner. She is a rare find, owned by experienced sailors. All manuals, warranties and original brochures are maintained aboard and will be passed on to her new owner. “CONCH TOWN LADY” has been thoughtfully and expertly designed by the best in the industry, combining current technology for both comfort and speed. This results in a thoughtful and well-executed deck layout and an interior with accommodations that are consistent with extended liveaboard bluewater sailing. Would-be buyers outnumber sellers, so if you are looking for a phenomenal yacht, move quickly. “CONCH TOWN LADY” is a rare find and is well known by the listing broker and one of the original founders of Valiant Yachts; call him today for more details.
