Lokelani is a 2001 Hylas 49 center cockpit cutter that represents the very best of the bluewater cruising era when yachts were built without compromise. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens and constructed by Queen Long, the Hylas 49 has long been regarded as one of the finest performance cruising yachts in her class. These boats were engineered for serious passagemaking, with a hull form that balances speed, comfort, and seakindly motion, and with construction standards that rival much larger custom yachts.
Lokelani has a three stateroom layout that works exceptionally well for both full-time living aboard and extended offshore cruising. The interior is warm and inviting, finished in beautifully varnished teak with a high-gloss cabin sole and carefully designed handholds and storage throughout. Large fixed windows in the salon, along with opening ports and multiple overhead hatches, fill the interior with natural light and fresh air, giving the boat an open and welcoming feel that is rare in this size range.
The main salon is arranged for both comfort and safety at sea. To port is a substantial dinette that converts into a double berth, making it ideal for offshore watch sleeping or additional guests. To starboard, a full-length settee serves as a comfortable sea berth and lounge. Headroom throughout the salon is just under six feet seven inches, adding to the feeling of space. Air conditioning with digital controls keeps the interior comfortable in tropical climates, and the Ultra Suede upholstery adds a modern, refined look.
The galley is one of the highlights of Lokelani. Stretching over seven feet in length, it is designed for serious offshore cooking with excellent bracing on either tack. There is abundant storage, a three-burner stove with oven, separate refrigeration and freezer systems, and large solid surface countertops. The walk-through layout provides easy access to the aft stateroom while still keeping the cook secure when the boat is underway.
Forward, Lokelani features two guest cabins that provide excellent accommodations for family or visiting crew. The forward stateroom offers a V-berth with filler to form a double, a custom spring mattress, ample cabinetry, and excellent ventilation. Aft and to port is the second guest cabin with a double berth and extensive storage. This cabin is also plumbed for a washer and dryer, a thoughtful touch for long-term cruising.
The forward head (freshwater) serves both guest cabins and is finished with solid surface counters, teak accents, and a separate shower area with teak grating and fold-down seat. All plumbing was thoughtfully specified, including dedicated holding tanks and high-quality sanitation hoses.
The owner’s stateroom aft is where Lokelani truly shines. This is a private retreat with a centerline queen berth, multiple hanging lockers, built-in seating, and abundant ventilation from opening ports, a deck hatch, and dorade vents. Storage is excellent, and the custom mattress and thoughtful lighting make it a very comfortable space both at anchor and underway. The private en suite head features a separate shower, solid surface vanity, a freshwater flushing toilet, and its own holding tank.
Lokelani is equally impressive from a mechanical and systems standpoint. The engine is easy to maintain with excellent access and dual filtration, and the yacht has systems in place to support self-sufficient cruising, including on-board power generation, battery capacity, watermaking, and climate control.
On deck, Lokelani is set up for easy short-handed sailing and serious passagemaking. The mast and boom furling system simplify mainsail handling, while powered winches reduce the effort of sail trim. The cutter rig with a furling genoa and staysail gives tremendous versatility and balance across a wide range of conditions, and durable sails complete an efficient sail plan.
The cockpit is secure and comfortable, with teak seating, a folding table, and a stainless-steel arch that can support panels and deck gear. The anchoring and ground tackle arrangement provide confidence when anchoring in remote locations.
Lokelani is a proven world cruiser that has crossed oceans, lived aboard comfortably, and been continually upgraded by knowledgeable owners. Few yachts combine this level of build quality, sailing performance, and true liveaboard comfort. For anyone seeking a serious bluewater cruising yacht that still feels like a refined home, Lokelani stands out as a rare and compelling opportunity.
