IN THE OWNERS WORDS:
Having previously owned a Pacific Seacraft 37, we were looking for another blue water boat with a bit more interior volume, better systems access and a bit more performance. We had a chance to tour a recent V42, hull #185 at the 2009 Annapolis Boat show, after we met her owners Jay and Tanya at the Valiant Owner’s get together during the show.
This was the start of a friendship where we benefited immensely from their prior cruising experience and knowledge of new build options. We visited the Valiant factory and toured a spec boat that was substantially complete but decided we would prefer to start with a blank slate, so we were able to add options during construction to our exact preferences and specifications. This came at additional time and cost of course, but building a new semi-custom boat is a once in a lifetime experience. So we started on an intense 1 year plus build process where we delved into a dizzying amount of detail and thought. Quite simply put, we looked for the best of everything.
For our electronics, around 2009 / 2010 there was an emerging transition from NMEA0183 and closed proprietary marine electronics to NMEA2000 where one could select components from multiple manufacturers and have them converse over the NMEA2000 backbone. Our suite of electronics include: Furuno for their radar and MFD, Simrad for their Autopilot, Airmar for their transducers and ultrasonic weather station, Actisense for their N2K gateways and Maretron for their extensive family of N2K Sensors and Displays. Built around the Maretron Mid Sized backbone (specified in blue color) we have been able to replace / upgrade components as technology has advanced.
Our friend, sailor and sailmaker Peter Grimm helped us select offshore radial hydranet sails for the main sail and 110 genoa which has held its shape through the years. A more conventional Dacron panel cut staysail and later, an Asymmetrical Spinnaker on a Harken structural furler were added.
Another friend, sailor, writer John Kretschmer showed us the benefits of a whisker pole and opting for the full carbon/fibre Forespar that weighs a manageable 24lbs., which insured that we used it more often.
Another friend and rigger Bob Pingel did all of our running rigging, understanding our cruising needs and specified a mixture of New England Ropes Sta-Set and VPC .
While the factory standard of using Antal for rope clutches and line organizers, Lewmar for winches and blocks was a good one – we raised the bar going primarily with Spinlock XX0812 High Load clutches and Harken’s highest performing Black Magic family of blocks.
Of course I am biased, but I don’t think you can find a better outfitted Valiant anywhere!
Before my retirement in 2015, we used “LITTLE WING” primarily as a day sailor as well as a once a season, week long “cruise” when we were able to escape work for a week, all on Lake Michigan.
After retirement, we sailed her out of the Great Lakes and into the Erie Canal and down the East Coast to our new home base in South Carolina. Since then we’ve settled into a cadence of cruising for about 6 months of the year on her, going further south to The Bahamas.
She has taken good care of us for almost 15 years. And as I told Bob Perry, it’s been a privilege to be her first caretakers.
Note From The Broker: The current owners considered a spec boat which was substantially completed but opted to build anew, at additional time and expense to get the exact options they wanted. These factory installed options amounted to 164k in 2010 dollars (or roughly 220k in 2025 dollars) not including electronics, sails, running rigging or full carbon pole.
ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:
“LITTLE WING” was custom built for two with room for occasional guests. A family would find her layout a perfect solution for separate stateroom privacy!! With over 6’5” of headroom, she is highly customized and styled with the heritage of the finest features found in the most sought after yachting accommodations; bright, well ventilated and finished in the soft, sumptuous ambiance of furniture quality cherry interior.
Her MAIN FEATURE is the much sought after, V-BERTH forward and head and double stateroom aft.
Starting forward, the Queen V-berth stateroom has a extra wide queen sized berth with a custom Handcraft box spring mattress. The hull sides are finished with Ash battens and there are two roomy storage cabinets with doors on each side. The mattress is stitched down the center longitudinally, so one can fold it over and access the voluminous storage areas Port/Stbd below.
LED reading lights are installed along with book shelves port and starboard, providing perfect individual space in this large & comfortable forward berth. One central locker currently serves as an easily accessible location for a large tool bag and spares. There is a large locker to port with a seat bench and a smaller hanging locker and a bench seat to starboard. Both hanging lockers now have shelves (2019) as the owners found they did not cruise with clothes on hangers. (Shelves are removable and closet rod can be reinstalled). The bi-fold Cherry door, which separates the V-berth from the main saloon, provides privacy with dressing space in the cabin.
There are TWO large Lewmar opening screened hatches overhead which provide superior flow-thru ventilation, directly over the berth and access to the chain locker is most forward. Two Hood Stainless Steel Ports screened ports add to the light and wonderful air circulation in the Queen V-Berth.
Next aft is the extremely spacious main salon with a traditional centerline solid cherry drop-leaf table. Table width was reduced by approx. 4” to allow those seated on the port side to exit between the table and bulkhead. There is a deep storage area on the table top with lift ring and teak cover that serves as the liquor cabinet. The full length L-shaped settee to port, is a perfect sea berth with a stowed custom Phifertex lee cloth under the Ultraleather cushions. There is storage outboard of the settee, with 2 large cabinets at the aft and forward ends of the settee with double shelves in between. The forward cabinet had removable shelving added (2019).
To starboard, is another full length settee berth with cabinetry and shelves outboard and double book shelf with additional storage behind the settee back. There is a 2nd stowed custom Phifertex lee cloth stowed under the cushion. These make for the best berths at sea, secure but with good ventilation and experiencing the least motion (2017). Stainless water tanks are under the settees and are designed to come right out the companionway if you ever need to replace them, but being high and dry under the settees, that most likely will never be an issue.
Following the main saloon on the port side, is a classic OFFSHORE designed “U” shaped galley, that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside. The galley is one of the most important aspects of a great cruising boat and the Valiant 42 has a galley coveted by all cruisers because it has everything you need including the Valiant pantry! There is a commodious, properly insulated 9 cubic foot reefer/freezer, well illuminated (2019) 3-burner Propane Gimballed stove and oven, single large stainless steel sink (2015)
, more custom cabinetry, generous counter space, hot & cold pressure water, manual salt water pump, slide out trash bin, spice rack and ample storage in drawers, below sink cabinetry and in counter top lockers. To port is the most unique pantry on any sailing vessel of this size. There are 4 extremely deep, slide out shelves with locks with storage cabinet over and locking louvered door for ventilation.
There is an opening port and overhead hatch with screens in the galley for optimum ventilation. A 12V socket if active ventilation is desired. This award winning galley layout is well known in the cruising community and the galley on “LITTLE WING” is the social center while preparing gourmet meals, even underway.
Opposite the galley and to starboard is a large, proper forward facing “navigators station” and “ships command center”, with tremendous room for the exceptional compliment of electronic navigation and communication equipment and chart book storage, in addition to the well laid out electrical panel. The desk lid opens for flat chart and cruising chart books, there is a drawer at centerline with LARGE storage cabinet under. Storage is also found under the nav seat and outboard under the electrical panels. There is a screened opening port for light and ventilation. Alpenglow light, with both day and red night vision lights with low amperage bicolor dome lights in the head, quarter berth as well. There is a well placed overhead hatch from which you can check sail trim from the navigator’s seat.
Immediately aft of the galley and just to port of the main center entry companionway, there is a double berth with two drawers, hanging locker & dressing seat with storage under and is a comfortable cabin for two plus a perfect sea berth for the off watch crew, as they can be comfortably sleeping just 3’ from the cockpit, if they are needed quickly.
The double berth can be used as a storage area for cockpit cushions, ditch bag, ASail, etc. But when there are guests, this cabin becomes a nice double berth with privacy as it the “pizza door”, that when open, provides light and air, and when closed up, provides complete privacy. There are two screened opening ports and an overhead hatch for wonderful light and air ventilation.
Directly to starboard of the centerline companionway, is the offshore designed head, handy to the cockpit, with a Lavac Popular forward facing toilet. The head is located starboard adjacent to the companionway and is the ideal design in a offshore passageway. The base of the companionway has a grate for drainage of wet foul weather gear after coming off watch. The companionway is specifically designed narrow enough so there is no risk of being knocked off the stairs. Each stair tread has been upgraded with Treadmaster non slip inserts at the factory. The stall shower makes a perfect wet locker on a passage with a hanging locker outboard of the shower. Large counter space with oval stainless sink with a great deal of storage under and in the Cherry cabinets’ outboard. The head bi-fold privacy door works well and there is a clothes hamper. There are lockers behind the shower seat, a teak grate underfoot and an opening screened port for ventilation. The separate shower area is curtained and separate from the rest of the head. Both shower and sink plumbing fixtures have shutoff valves at the nozzle to conserve water during usage. The sink pull out hose fixture was designed to allow for fresh water flushing of the Lavac when discharging to the black water tank.
Shelves with locker doors align the toilet area side above the counter and S.S. sink has a large storage cabinet under. The engine room has great access from a large door behind the toilet which gives you a large 2nd access to the engine area.
