Boat Description

The Oyster 43, built in the UK by Oyster Marine and designed by Stephen Jones, is a solid and reliable performance cruising yacht with sleek lines. This particular Oyster 43, Nepenthe, has a remarkable history. It was the first Oyster purchased by an American buyer and was also the first Oyster to be displayed at the Annapolis Boat Show in 1985.

Nepenthe has had excellent caretakers over the years. The second owner kept her for more than 20 years, during which she circumnavigated the globe. Now, she is located in Panama, in the beautiful cruising grounds of Bocas del Toro. She’s ready for her next adventure, whether it’s heading back to the Caribbean or crossing into the Pacific, with just a bit of recommissioning needed.

The yacht offers comfortable accommodation with two double cabins, a single head with a shower, three sea berths, and a convertible saloon. The fore cabin has been converted into a larger storage area and chain locker but could easily be restored to its original layout.

In 2012, Nepenthe was repowered with a Volvo 40 hp diesel engine, which now has just over 800 hours. The standing rigging was replaced in 2016. She’s fully equipped for long-distance cruising with solar panels, a Spectra water maker, a Monitor wind vane steering system, Cetrek autopilot, Raymarine instruments, a Garmin Plotter, and SSB radio. The dinghy comes with a Tohatsu 9.8hp outboard.

Although Nepenthe has been stored ashore for the past 18 months, she has been regularly maintained, and cleaned and is in good condition. However, some recommissioning and tidying will be required once she’s launched. The current owner, who is unable to attend to the yacht due to family commitments, holds both New Zealand and UK registrations for the boat.

Having sold this boat to the current owner, we can confidently assure you of its excellent systems and history of careful maintenance.

With a solid sail inventory and plenty of anchors, Nepenthe is an ideal long-distance cruiser and liveaboard, with an outstanding pedigree at an excellent price.
