KALIK is built in the US by Westerly Marine, a custom boat builder founded in 1970 and located in Santa Anna, California specializing in Carbon Fiber Performance Vessels. The design office of Morelli & Melvin, also located in California, worked closely with Westerly Marine on this evolutionary design and continue to set the standard for large performance cruising catamarans.
Design Philosophy:
The M&M 65 is a performance sailing yacht. KALIK is custom designed for fast, worldwide cruising by Morelli & Melvin Design & Engineering. All systems are designed to be as light and efficient as possible with low maintenance.
A powerful sailplan provides KALIK with speeds up to 30 knots. She is designed as a pure sailing machine and the engines are kept small and light. Cruising speed with engines is about 9 knots. Her maiden voyage easily averaged speeds around 20 knots.
Design evolutions: Morrelli & Melvin's uniquely shaped wave-piercing reverse bows, high bridgedeck clearance and complimentary underbody save weight and windage but also reduce pitching motions to ensure comfortable and fast cruising. An innovative dagger rudder system with simplified, light weight components and special fairings also minimize speed-robbing turbulence around the rudder.
Energy efficient: KALIK is a clean, comfortable cruising yacht riding the “Green Wave”.
A large array of IQ’s custom-built, marine-grade solar panels on the cabin top combined with an advanced electronic control system reduces generator time to an absolute minimum. These low profile solar panels are smaller and shaped to the contours of the cabin top to ensure that more solar cells are working in all conditions. This sophisticated solar system charges the Gensun battery management system of lightweight, high-tech, Lithium/Ion batteries.
Main power requirements on KALIK, such as refrigeration, instrumentation, lighting, winches, etc. are all DC and easily run on solar power, eliminating the need for large inverters for power conversion and thereby reducing weight and energy losses.
A small and light weight DC generator is used in lieu of the typical heavier and bulkier AC generator and is used just a backup and for filling dive tanks with the electrical Brownie dive compressor and heating water with the electrical water heaters.
A clever ventilation concept and airy interior replaces the use of heavy, power consuming and complicated air conditioning. And her roomy and very contemporary interior offers all necessary comfort and is easy to keep clean.
The Electro Scan waste treatment system allows the use of relative small holding tanks. In addition to weight saving, Electro Scan takes marine sanitation to the next level making discharges safe for environmentally sensitive areas and reducing power consumption by up to 36%.
Broker Comments:
Close to $3.9M has gone to design, construct, and equip KALIK. Her owner's planned circumnavigation has been unfortunately halted by life's happenings and has therefore decided to sell. KALIK is a fantastic opportunity to own a serious performance world cruiser at a fraction of the cost to build.
Presently in Escondido for the hurricane season and due to relocate in November to La Paz for the winter. La Paz, Mexico has an international airport and can allow easy viewings for serious buyers of this very special, sailing yacht. Contact me today to discuss KALIK and plan your next adventure.
KALIK features head turning good looks and luxurious amenities along with numerous performance features, attracting the serious and passionate sailor. Her well thought out design makes use of evolutionary wave-piercing hulls and many of the vessels systems are designed to be as 'green' and energy efficient as possible.
