1988 Gozzard 36

Vessel Description:

Step aboard this timeless 1988 Gozzard 36 and discover a yacht that combines traditional elegance with practical blue-water cruising design.

Her graceful clipper bow and finely crafted joinery reflect the unmistakable heritage of Ted Gozzard, designed for both beauty and purpose. At just over 42 feet long overall, she maintains a manageable footprint while offering exceptional interior volume and flexibility. Below decks, the innovative “transformer” layout adapts seamlessly to your needs, providing open social spaces or private quarters with the effortless conversion of sliding bulkheads and settees that become a comfortable centerline berth.

With its 12-foot beam, cockpit island pod, and thoughtfully laid-out galley and head, this vessel is perfectly suited for entertaining or extended voyages in comfort. Under sail, her modified fin keel and cutter rig offer solid handling and reliability, while her under-5-foot draft opens up a world of shallow-water cruising.

Built to last and meticulously maintained, she’s ready to take you beyond coastal cruising into world-class passages without compromise.

Vessel Specifications:

Layout & Accommodations

One of my favorite things about this Gozzard 36 is the flexible interior layout. The forward salon converts into a completely private stateroom with a centerline double berth, or I can open the bulkheads to make it one big lounge when friends come aboard. There’s a quarter berth aft, a proper navigation station, and a head with a separate shower. The space feels much larger than most 36-footers, and it’s all finished in beautiful joinery that still looks classic today

Galley

The galley is secure and practical at sea. I’ve got a three-burner propane stove with oven, a top-loading fridge/freezer, double stainless sinks, and more storage than you’d expect. It’s easy to cook real meals on passage or at anchor, and I love the way everything is within arm’s reach when the boat is moving.

Deck & Equipment

Up on deck, she’s built for safe and easy movement. The side decks are wide with solid bulwarks, and the bowsprit gives her those beautiful lines while keeping the anchors ready to drop. The cockpit is roomy, with a center helm and a walk-through transom that makes dinghy access simple. I also like how much ventilation she has with butterfly hatches and opening ports, it keeps the boat cool in warm weather.

Electronics & Navigation

She’s fitted with reliable navigation gear, GPS, autopilot, depth and wind instruments, and an Icom VHF both at the nav station and cockpit. Everything’s laid out where it should be, so keeping watch offshore is easy and stress-free.

Electrical, Power & Plumbing

The electrical system is straightforward and robust. She has a Heart inverter/charger, plenty of battery capacity, shore power hookup, and a diesel heater for those cold mornings. The water system is pressurized with a good-sized tank, and the hot water heater works off both shore power and engine heat.

Engine & Mechanical

The Westerbeke diesel has been a dependable workhorse. It starts right up and pushes her easily when the wind dies. Fuel capacity is around 40–45 gallons, which gives her good range under power. The mechanical systems are simple and easy to service, which is exactly what you want when cruising far from a marina.

Sails & Rigging

She’s cutter-rigged with a manageable sail plan. The main, staysail, and headsail are all easy to handle, and I can reef quickly without leaving the cockpit thanks to self-tailing winches and lines led aft. The cutter rig gives great balance in all conditions, and she’ll sail herself for hours when trimmed right.

Additional Information

This boat displaces around 17,000 pounds with 6,800 pounds of ballast, which makes her incredibly steady offshore. The draft is just under five feet, so I can get into shallower anchorages without worrying. The hull is solid fiberglass, built to go anywhere. I’ve kept her well maintained and she’s ready to cruise immediately, whether that means island-hopping in the Bahamas or setting out on a serious bluewater adventure.
