SHOULD YOU PURCHASE A NEW OR USED YACHT?
New Versus Pre-owned Yachts
The first question that any buyer should ask is: How long do I plan to own the boat?

Most boats depreciate the bulk of their value in the first five years. If one knows that they will own the boat for much more then five years then new definitely will make more sense.

Conversely, if one thinks that the length of ownership will be just one, or two years to "check it out", then used makes lots of sense.

Another great advantage to buying new is ease of ownership. The maintenance will be much less and new equipment has much fewer problems and is also covered by warranty. Here is where great dealer support is important as a good dealer can make ownership much more enjoyable, since the owner doesn't have to deal with any of the 'new boat problems' that may pop up.

The new buyer has a greater say in what equipment is chosen, what layout they want, what color, fabrics, etc., on & on. Also, the equipment installed by the factory or the dealer is a professional installation by experienced individuals, not the do-it-yourselfer who is out trying to save money.

Maintenance

In the same breath, it is not nearly as important for a new boat owner to be 'handy with their hands' or knowledgeable of all things 'marine.' However, a "used boat owner" had better be able to fix some of the things themselves, or the money saved by buying used could get eaten up by Boat Yard bills and marine service contractors.

Financing

Generally speaking, new boat financing costs less and is easier to secure and spread out over a longer time. Also, some people just don't like sleeping in someone else's bed or using someone else's head, closets and drawers. They revel in the 'newness' of a new boat. From the smell, to the look of everything; new is shiny, crisp and clean, not someone else's 'old boat.'

Better Prices

A used boat offers it's own side of advantages. The biggest advantage is it will cost much less! You also have a vast selection of proven & tested boat choices. Buying a used boat is a compromise of sorts, though. Unless you are one in a million you will never find your dream boat, just as you like it, on the used market.
Greater Selection

Another advantage of buying used is that the availability of used boats is generally better. New boat dealers rarely have what you want in stock and even basic commissioning takes time. Used boats are accepted "as is, where is" once the closing has taken place, but the time from making an offer and sailing away is generally way less in a used boat versus new.
