What I want you to know is that you can easily gain confidence sailing your catamaran offshore. Most of my clients plan to cruise with their families. By gaining confidence in your sailing abilities you can safely manage the experience for everyone onboard and learn useful tips and tricks for making life aboard easy and fun. Here are some suggestions that have proven to be successful for some of my clients:

If you have no sailing experience the sailing school route will be best to gain a basis of knowledge. Rob Swain Sailing School in the BVI offers weeklong live aboard courses on a Lagoon 440. They can also offer private instruction on any of the charter catamarans in our BVI fleet.
If you are thinking about owning a yacht in charter you can sample The Catamaran Company’s charter fleet and fine services while in the BVI on your course. You can’t ask for more than spending a week sailing some of the finest catamarans built today.

We also offer the opportunity to purchase your new or pre-owned catamaran and have one of our fully licensed captains go along with you for the delivery to your home port. This is an excellent way to fast-track the learning curve and get proficient with your new catamaran!
Many catamarans are built overseas and are sailed each season to their owners on their own bottoms. Why not go sailing on a sea worthy boat under the guidance of an experienced professional skipper and sail offshore for free? You can choose trips for several days or weeks.
Joining a delivery as crew is perfect if you’re seeking to gain experience sailing offshore before departing on your own cruising adventure. Since catamarans have so much room and you are offering to go for free, there is little reason for a delivery skipper not to take along willing and able sailors. In exchange you will get many sea miles and the opportunity to sail a catamaran and experience the thrill and beauty of sailing a catamaran offshore.
Enthusiasm is an important positive factor and can overcome a lack of experience. You will be asked if you can cook, navigate, service diesel engines, use radar, use a SSB radio, etc. to determine your skills and where you can fit in as part of the delivery team. The owner will normally pay your passage back to the point of origin of the passage.
Frequently opportunities to crew on ocean passages appear through advertisements in sailing magazines, over the Internet or through organizations like Hank Schmitt’s Offshore Passage Opportunities, which specialize in placing crew with skippers.
