Lagoon Designer Interview
From the Lagoon Archives, 2006
Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prevost

When did you start your own design office?
February 1983

How big is your design office today?
These are two offices; one In Paris and the other in Arradon (Vannes)

How long have you been working with LAGOON?
We began with Gerard Lambert, a 50’ foil design in, 1983. The first LAGOON was built in 1987 by Jeanneau Advanded Technologies (JTA, created in 1984).

What is your conception of the modern cruising catamaran?
The catamaran market is evolving in different ways. Despite their origins in the racing circuit, today’s catamarans are appreciated more for their space and comfort than for their performance characteristics. Thistendancy represents the heart of the market and the LAGOON line of catamarans is perfectly adapted to this style. This movement toward comfort is leading to the further developments where comfort overrides performance, but it must also be said that the standard definition of the elements that make up this notion of comfort (and therefore the associated weight) are found on all projects nowadays, regardless of the desire to keep it light! There are several concepts possible for a modern catamaran according to the customer’s criteria, what counts that most is the coherence between displacement, length, and sail area.

How would you describe the LAGOON line today?
Lagoons are comfortable boats, seaworthy (that has always been top priority), with performance that corresponds to customer expectations. Destined for short or long-distance cruising, they are well-finished boats marketed principally towards the private owner.

What characteristics do your new projects for LAGOON have?
The idea of “levels”. We are looking to utilize the exterior upper level in two different manners: - a covered cockpit for meal and idle relaxation, away from the helm and lines.
- an upper cockpit with the helm station and breezy sun deck.

What do you think of LAGOON?
Our relationship with LAGOON is above all friendly. We came on board at the same tine as the first customers, and what was supposed to be a “quick short”, that is two boats built from a lightly-built mould has become a fantastic business! LAGOON’s history and our own are closely linked by past events but also by the personal relationships. We have worked closely together on product development, next-generation model, and technical evolutions. On the technical side, LAGOON is evolving at the highest level, and has the courage to innovate. We completely share the same spirit and the same unambiguous technical philosophy. It’s been nothing but pleasure!
