Anegada, British Virgin Islands
BACK >>

Many charterers are surprised to find out that we allow them to go to Anegada. Yes the island is partly surrounded by a reef and yes you cannot see it visually until you are close to it, but it makes a welcome addition to your itinerary if you have done all the other highlights in the BVI.

I would not recommend Anegada for the first time charterer that only has 7 days to spend in paradise, there is so much to do that is closer to hand, however, if you have 2 weeks or are a repeated visitor to the islands, then why not?

The easiest way to Anegada is to leave from North Sound, Virgin Gorda around or before midday and settle the boat on a heading of 5 degrees magnetic. You will not see the island but I'm sure you will be sailing in company with at least one other boat on the trip, it gives you the excuse to try your hand at racing them anyway! If you wish, the chart we supply has the waypoint for Anegada printed on it and this can easily be fed into the onboard GPS. As you close the island you will see the tops of palm trees swaying in the breeze and pick up the roofs of the buildings ashore, just stay West of all you see and no further East than 5 degrees on the compass and you'll safely pick up the navigational marks to lead you into the lagoon. You'll arrive around 2 hours after leaving North Sound (12nm), maybe sooner if you're really good, and the sun will be nice and high to show the channel in.

Once in pick up a mooring or anchor off Setting Point, relax and contemplate that Lobster dinner at the Anegada Reef Hotel, Potter's, or Neptune's Treasure a short walk along the beach. If you are lucky to have arrived early, or have a lay day to spare, why not hire a car, bike or get a taxi over to Loblolly Bay, a beautiful beach with exceptional snorkeling located on the north coast.

Why go to Anegada?

  • Because you can!
  • The cracking sail there and then to Jost Van Dyke, or Cane Garden Bay the next day. (28nm)
  • Snorkeling/diving. There are over 300 wrecks that fell foul of the coral reefs.
  • Loblolly Bay.
  • Flamingo's and Iguana's.
  • Really laid back, slow lifestyle.
  • Lobster.
  • A really unique island in geographical and nature terms.
